Dixon Marketing Inc. (DMI) of Kinston, NC, has kept America's military supplied since 1964. Not with bullets and tanks, but with something equally important: groceries. Always looking for ways to streamline procedures and help reps maximize their in-store time, DMI recently began researching ways to eliminate a time-consuming, error-prone paper-based replenishment system in the 173 commissaries it services in the contiguous United States. Schwan's drivers previously had used a combination of route books, mobile computers and dot-matrix printers to process customer information in the field. Schwan's selected Intermec because its proven products met the company's requirements, managers said. The new system uses Intermec 700 Series mobile computers and wireless printers that communicate through a Bluetooth wireless interface. With thousands of Schwan's drivers using the devices to serve millions of households, the application is believed to be the world's first large-scale Bluetooth implementation. tech news
