Starwood Hotels and Resorts Worldwide, Inc is one of the world's largest hotel and leisure companies. SAP workload was rising rapidly, reaching around 500,000 dialogue steps (with a forecast 1,000,000) and almost 5,000 batch jobs daily. To maintain performance, it was clear that either an upgrade or a new system was required. Starwood selected a new IBM eServer iSeries Model 890, with 32 processors supporting three logical partitions (LPARs). Currently, 24 processors are activated, giving 25 per cent 'headroom' for expansion. tech news

HVB Bank Biochim (www.biochim.com/en) is the fourth largest bank in Bulgaria in terms of assets. When HVB Bank Biochim's rapid growth began to impact on the performance of its core banking systems, the bank looked to IBM for a new solution. Kirchman worked with IBM Bulgaria to size a new solution for HVB Bank Biochim, resulting in the implementation of a new IBM eServer z800, and the migration of existing systems to z/OS. They migrated legacy mainframe systems to z/OS on a new IBM eServer zSeries 800, added a second z800 as backup, implemented two IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Storage Server 800 systems. tech news

dm-drogerie markt (www.dmdrogeriemarkt.de) is one of Germany's leading over-the-counter chemist retail chains, with stores in Austria, Italy, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Slovakia and Slovenia. Based in Meridian, Mississippi, IEPG supplies engine parts for passenger cars and light trucks, as well as for marine, industrial, agricultural and high-performance applications. Managers at Internal Engine Parts Group needed to modernize their order-entry, warehousing and distribution systems to become more efficient and reach new markets. The Norwegian Meteorological Institute, Oslo, (the Institute, www.met.no) is responsible for short- and- longrange weather and ocean forecasting for Norway, and also provides daily predictions of pollution levels. They needed to deliver more accurate weather, ocean and pollution forecasts, more frequently and develop weather forecasts and climate models for national and international customers. The Institute chose a cluster of 40 IBM eServer Model 325 servers, each with dual AMD Opteron processors running Red Hat Linux. The cluster is linked using Myrinet low-latency highspeed networking technology, and managed with Scali Manage, from IBM Business Partner Scali. tech news
