Systems Management APIs for z/VM

This paper describes the z/VM Systems Management Application Programming Interface (API), a programming interface to manage many aspects of a z/VM system. The interface is based on the Open Network Computing Remote Procedure Call (ONC/RPC) protocol, a platform-independent and language-neutral protocol for remote procedure execution. The Systems Management API is TCP/IP-based and provides a rich set of functions to handle many aspects of z/VM management. tech news

Building the Foundation of the Multimedia Wireless Internet: The Migration to IPv6 and MPLS for UMTS

This paper discusses some of the challenges presented by "always-on," content-rich services, and how IPv6 and MPLS solve these challenges and present opportunities for operator profitability while minimizing equipment churn. This paper demonstrates the commitment and leadership in delivering a seamless, phased approach to UMTS Release 5 that will require the enabling technologies of IPv6 and MPLS to deliver QoS for the "all-IP" common multiservice infrastructure of tomorrow. tech news

The Real-Time IP Network: Moving IP Networks Beyond Best Effort to Deliver Real-Time Applications

The Internet has experienced tremendous growth over the past decade - fueled primarily by best effort applications such as e-mail, web browsing and file transfer. Despite this impressive growth, IP networks have had mixed success in supporting newer Real-Time applications and converged legacy services. This paper identifies the specific reliability and stability limitations of traditional best effort networks, and outlines the steps required to upgrade an IP network to achieve the performance required for profitable Real-Time services. tech news

Leveraging IP Connectivity, Securely and Cost-Effectively: Lessons From the Field

E-Business and its component technologies have allowed companies to work efficiently and effectively across all elements of their business environments. Progressive businesses are steadily expanding Internet Protocol (IP)-based ebusiness network infrastructure capabilities to broaden access to corporate data and foster extensive interaction among their employees, customers, suppliers, and partners. Enterprises are witnessing steady increases in efficiency for procurement and inventory, supply chain management, workflow, training, and knowledge management. This paper presents some of the most critical success factors for ensuring a trouble-free and low total cost security infrastructure. It also reviews key findings from several leading organizations that have implemented the Nokia/Check Point security solutions. tech news

VoIP - Voice Over Internet Protocol

The telephone system is circuit-switched, while the Internet is packet-switched. The telephone system is optimized for transmitting the human voice; the Internet is optimized for transmitting digital information. The human voice, like any other information, can be converted to bits and sent over the Internet. This is Voice over Internet Protocol, or VoIP. VoIP calls are much less expensive than conventional phone calls, but VoIP currently lacks reliability, security and voice quality. VoIP is a truly disruptive innovation - lower quality and less expensive than its competitor, but with the potential to improve faster and displace the competition. tech news
