VoIP / IP TelephonyCentral Bucks School District Makes the Grade With an IBM Solution The Central Bucks School District (CBSD) manages some 25 elementary, middle and high schools in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. To keep up with changing technology and enrich the quality of education that it offers to students, CBSD sought to update its systems and augment its processes. In 2001, CBSD signed a deal to lease a private fiber-optic network that would connect all the sites around the district to the administration center, and more specifically to a new network operations center that was under construction at the time. In addition to the new server and storage solution, CBSD implemented a new voice over Internet Protocol (VOIP) system.

Transformation: The Superclass Carrier?Strategies for VoIP Deployment The move has begun to convert the world's circuit-switched voice infrastructure to Voice over IP (VoIP). Voice over IP can address problems in the network, such as lack of central office facilities, while freeing up capital that may have been planned to address existing problems. Deploying VoIP access in the typical end office requires as much as 80 percent less space and can reduce power and HVAC requirements by up to 50 percent1. In many cases, carriers have planned real estate or equipment upgrades to address space and/or power shortages. By redirecting this planned spending towards a transition to VoIP, facility costs and space requirements can be reduced.

The Practical Communications Solution: Converged Networking With 3Com IP Telephony As enterprise organizations are pressed to make the most of their limited resources, many are turning to Internet Protocol (IP) telephony solutions built on a converged voice and data network infrastructure. A carefully selected IP telephony solution can help organizations meet the challenges of today's marketplace, enabling them to increase productivity, better support mobile and remote employees, and reduce their total cost of ownership (TCO). This paper reviews the potential business benefits and key technical requirements of a converged IP telephony solution, and illustrates how 3Com IP telephony solutions enable organizations to maximize these benefits.

IP Telephony in Branch Networks: The Case for Voice Boundary Routing Enterprises in banking, insurance, real estate, and retailing have a basic business topology of dozens, hundreds, or thousands of small branch offices that are chartered to service their local communities. Communications-wise, these branches need both local telephony services to connect with customers and business applications such as e-mail, workflow, command and control, or technology support services to support hierarchical corporate infrastructures. IP telephony and an emerging suite of convergence applications can uniquely deliver outstanding reliability, productivity, and lower costs. These technologies and capabilities are at the heart of the business case to justify a new approach to the branch network.
