Ace technology is the obvious next step in the evolution of high level programming languages for the network computer. Ace is a research project in Sun Microsystems Laboratories, a small R&D division at Sun Microsystems, Inc. The project has produced a network programming model, along with an application programming language (with several specialized sublanguages) and a compiler for it that can generate and deploy a working application in a variety of architectures. tech news

UML, being the industry standard as a common OO modeling language, needs a well-defined semantic base for its notation. Formalization of the graphical notation enables automated processing and analysis tasks. This paper describes a methodology for synthesis of a Petri net model from UML diagrams. The approach is based on deriving Object Net Models from UML statechart diagrams and connecting these object models based on UML collaboration diagram information. The resulting system-level Petri net model can be used as a foundation for formal Petri net analysis and simulation techniques. tech news

The demand for educational software is growing exponentially with the surge of interest in educational reform, the Internet and distance education. A Web-based Interactive Course Tool was developed at West Virginia University. The tool provides components for instructors, administrators, and students to interact effectively through the Internet. In current-day object-oriented software development, the software design (typically modeled as a collection of UML diagrams) is an essential aspect. As a result, future object-oriented legacy systems will encounter the non-negligible problem of design inconsistencies in its various forms. Unfortunately, in its generality, detecting these design inconsistencies is an undecidable problem. Therefore, we suggest restricting to description logic, a decidable fragment of first-order predicate logic, to specify and detect inconsistencies between UML models. tech news

This paper will begin with a quick tour of the two design domains that are trying to bridge: firstly the object-oriented class model as represented in the UML, and secondly the relational database model. For each domain, the paper looks only at the main features that will affect our task. The paper will then look at the techniques and issues involved in mapping from the class model to the database model, including object persistence, object behavior, relationships between objects and object identity.
